This source of funding is not new to Scarborough. Voters have approved bonding for land conservation three times since 2000. Approval of the Land Bond is similar to an equity line of credit, since no funds are used without application to and approval by the Town Council.
Most recently, this Land Fund was used by Scarborough Land Trust to purchase the Blue Point Preserve, a 14-acre parcel adjacent to the Scarborough Marsh (with much help from the Friends of Scarborough Marsh). A lot of work remains to be done to establish meaningful protection of the Marsh ecosystem and the Land Fund, with careful vetting by the Town Council, is a wonderful resource to work toward that goal.
Every vote is critical. The Board of Directors of the Friends of Scarborough Marsh will be voting YES on Question 3 and we encourage you to join us.
