TThe Friends of Scarborough Marsh (FOSM) is an all-volunteer coalition of private citizens, businesses, organizations and government whose sole focus is the restoration and protection of the Scarborough Marsh through conservation, research and education. Despite continued challenges presented by the pandemic, FOSM has been able to successfully continue our work with community partners to set priorities, make decisions, take action and measure results.  We have:
  • Worked with Scarborough DPW on signage of the Scarborough Marsh Watershed to raise public awareness
  • Partnered with the Scarborough Public Library on our Scarborough Marsh Lecture Series covering a variety of topics relating to the marsh including Striped Bass Fishing on the Marsh and the Butterflies of the Marsh
  • Installed two Climate Change Observatory sites on the Eastern Trail bridge in collaboration with Southern Maine Conservation Collaborative
  • Partnered with the Scarborough Public Library on their new Makers Space Nonesuch River Virtual Tour
  • Sponsored the Maine Audubon virtual Field trip of the marsh for schools and partnered on marsh cleanups
  • In partnership with the Maine DEP Volunteer River Monitoring Program, FOSM conducted our third field season of water quality monitoring in eight marsh tributary streams and rivers
  • Conducted our own scientific field studies to advance understanding of the invasive Phragmites reed problem in the marsh focused on groundwater salinity at three research sites
  • Sponsored a USM intern study to evaluate the current stormwater discharge patterns on Phragmites growth
  • Completed the Scarborough Marsh Recreation Map with seed funds from Prouts Neck Association
With your help we plan to continue our efforts into 2022 through:
  • Collaboration with Scarborough Land Trust on land conservation of marshlands and the upland marsh watershed and support development of their Nonesuch River Blue Trail for canoeing and kayaking
  • Implementation of a demonstration project to assess the effectiveness of soil salinity modification for controlling the spread of Phragmites. Natural invasive control steps may be an important outcome of our work
  • Development and provision of grant support for the “Scarborough Marsh Friendly” Yard-Scaping program in partnership with the Town of Scarborough Pest Management Advisory Committee
  • Expansion of Maine Audubon iNaturalist program and funding their Scarborough School grade 5 marsh program
  • Grants to fund student research at USM, University of New England and UNE/Eastern Trail Gaptracks program
  • Expansion of marsh-related activities and opportunities for all. Keep informed with our seasonal Newsletter

You can continue to be part of the essential work that will help ensure the marsh remains a vibrant and healthy wild space for all to enjoy! Please give generously by year-end and join us as a Friend of Scarborough Marsh.
