New Donation of Land to Marsh

6/19/2015

Jim and Liz Maier recently donated approximately two acres as an addition to the Scarborough Marsh.  Located off Black Point Road near the Libby River, the 2.16-acre parcel consists of upland woodlands and wetlands and provides a buffer to the 3,200-acre Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area, the largest salt marsh in Maine.

The Friends of Scarborough Marsh helped facilitate the land donation and shared some of the transaction costs.

“Liz and I are pleased to have added this property to the Scarborough Marsh and we’re glad to know that these woods will always remain as open space,” said landowner Jim Maier.

“The Marsh is a unique part of Scarborough," said Rick Vogel, President of Friends of Scarborough Marsh.  "Thanks to the generosity of the Maiers, two more acres are now conserved as part of Scarborough’s natural gem."

The Maiers have lived in Scarborough for over 42 years.  Both retired, Jim was a psychiatrist in Portland and Liz was a librarian at Waynflete School.  Their home is over 100 years old and was once part of a larger farm owned by the Shaw family.  Jim and Liz love their land, wanted to permanently conserve it, and worked with the Friends of Scarborough Marsh to make it happen.  It was felt that adding the property to the Scarborough Marsh made the most sense.
