jannelle family donates land to marsh

5/6/2014

The Jannelle family has donated approximately three acres as an addition to the protected area of Scarborough Marsh, the largest salt marsh in Maine. Located at the end of Roundabout Drive off Black Point Road, the parcel consists of marsh and woodlands, and provides an upland buffer to the 3,200-acre Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area.

Scarborough Land Trust worked in partnership with Friends of Scarborough Marsh to fund and carry out the land transfer. The Town of Scarborough assisted with road title issues. The property has been deeded to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, which owns and manages the Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area.

“Our family is pleased to have added this property to the Scarborough Marsh,” said Alan Jannelle.

“The Marsh is a treasured part of Scarborough," said Paul Austin, President of Scarborough Land Trust. "Thanks to the generosity of the Jannelle family, three more acres are now conserved for wildlife habitat and scenic enjoyment."

The Jannelle family ran a well-known building and contracting company in Scarborough called F. X. Jannelle, Inc. on Ferry Road. They built and took care of many houses in the Prouts Neck area. The grandson of F.X., Neal Jannelle, Sr., died in 2009, and his wife, Barbara, in 2010. Their children, Karyn, Alan, Brian and Brenda, decided to conserve their family's land and adding the property to the Scarborough Marsh made the most sense.

"We were pleased to play a role in this project, and hope other landowners around the Marsh will consider doing the same with their land" said Rick Vogel, President of Friends of Scarborough Marsh.

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Chandler Woodcock added, "We are grateful to the Jannelle Family, Scarborough Land Trust, and Friends of Scarborough Marsh for taking the time and effort to protect this land as part of the Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area."
